Travelers Tips
For those travel nurses who love to cook, instead of buying new spices while on the road, pack small amounts of spices in Ziploc bags and store them inside an insulated lunch bag. Make sure to invite your new colleagues over for dinner!

Stories from the Road

Growing up in the Maritimes, I had always wanted to visit other parts of Canada, and the opportunity to travel and work was appealing. I had considered working overseas, but was daunted by the paperwork involved. I learned about Select Medical Connections' travel nursing program in Canada from a friend who had just completed an assignment in Alberta, so thought I would give it a try.

My recruiter was really patient with me, and took the time to explain the different options available. I decided to try an assignment in Manitoba. My license was processed very quickly, and within 3 weeks of contacting Select Med, I was on a plane. Who knew this could happen so easily?

I was picked up at the airport by one of the hospital's staff who took me to the condo where I am staying. They gave me a tour around town so that I could get my bearings and locate the hospital, the grocery store and the local internet café/bistro (yummy cinnamon buns). There is another travel nurse staying in the condo and she made me feel really welcome, although we are working in different departments so don't see each other that much. Still, it is nice being able to sightsee with another ‘tourist' on some of our days off. We visited some of the historic sites in the area, and even fit in a canoe trip.

My unit orientation gave me a good sense of the lay of the land, and of the hospital's procedures. The first couple of days were quite quiet, but have picked up. I have been covering acute care and backing up in the ER. So far, so good! My month-long assignment ends next week, and it has been a great experience. The staff here has been so welcoming, even throwing me a little party for my birthday! I need to cover some shifts at home for the next month, but I am definitely going to ‘hit the road' for another assignment in August. Thanks for making this so easy! Denise H.
