Nursing In Australia

At this time of year, many nurses completing their education contact us to discuss working abroad. Most request information on nursing in Australia.

There are two types of nurse in Australia: registered and enrolled. Registered nurses are educated in degree level courses at universities. Enrolled nurses are primarily educated through advanced certificate or diploma level courses in colleges of technical and further education.

There are six states and two territories in Australia. Each has a nurse regulatory authority which maintains its own register of qualified nurses. Each nurse must be registered or enrolled in the state or territory in which he/she intends to practice. There are mutual recognition laws in Australia which provide recognition of registration across state boundaries. Therefore a nurse registered in one state may apply for registration in another state under mutual recognition. There is a similar system in operation between Australia and New Zealand.

SMC can assist you in organizing your nursing adventure in Australia. Visit our Australia section on our website, and then contact us to find out more!

One of the first steps is to register with the regulatory authority in the state or territory in which you intend to practice. Many nurses choose to practice in Sydney, New South Wales. Here is the registration link: http://www.nmb.nsw.gov.au.

A new, second step involves passing an English competency exam as part of your eligibility requirements. SMC can help you maneuver the process so that you can begin your adventure as soon as possible.

Stories From The Road

Submitted by Kathleen G., RN

This is what we learned today while driving from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg.

1. The landscape changes from mountains to as flat as pancakes in the blink of an eye.

2. Watch for school buses in the middle of nowhere with not a house or school in sight. I think they let the kids out to play with the bears!!

3. There are 17 LCBO (liquor) outlets in the 797km drive (3 outlets were on their own with no homes in sight).

Moose 4. There are 2 types of Moose ... the 1st is the Moose that reads signs and only crosses within the specified distance ... for example Moose crossing for 72km ... not 65km not 75 but 72km. Then there are the Rogue Moose that are posted as "Moose on the Loose" ... apparently these individuals refuse to comply to the specific crossing zones.

5. As you approach the magical border between Ontario & Manitoba, there is a sign posted stating "Fire wood from Ontario not permitted into Manitoba due to bugs/disease" and "We need to preserve the Woodlands of Manitoba". Do the bugs not cross the imaginary line on their own?

6. Approximately 25kms into Manitoba a sign reads "Watch for Manitoba Moose". Apparently they are different from Ontario Moose. Now my question is, "If an Ontario Moose & Manitoba moose mate and have a baby moose, does the baby have dual citizenship?"
