Stories from the Road
It
was with much anticipation that I stepped onto the plane bound for Vancouver. I had always wanted to visit the city, and I couldn't believe my luck when Select Medical Connections called me with a 6 week assignment in one of Vancouver's suburbs! I had heard about travel nursing in the States
for the past few years, but had never really wanted to write the US NCLEX exam. Needless to say, I was so surprised when I received a call from Select informing me about travel nursing opportunities here in Canada. I love traveling and was getting tired of the 'same old, same old' in Toronto. The
opportunity to combine work with vacation was very appealing. I managed to combine some vacation time and trade some shifts, and now I was on a plane to Vancouver!
We touched down, and I made my way to the home where I would be staying. It was delightful! A beautifully decorated suite, fully furnished down to wireless internet service! The housing manager made me feel very welcome, and had even left a fruit basket for me!. After
settling in, I made my way around the neighbourhood to check out the local grocery store and transit connections to the hospital. It's nice to feel safe in my new neighbourhood.
The next morning I started in the ER. I had a full orientation, met the staff (who were very welcoming), and started my shift. While their department is run a little differently than my hospital at home, it was really just a matter of learning who and where everything
was. My home hospital is not as busy as this one, yet I still feel comfortable using my range of skills.
I've been here 3
weeks now, and have settled into a nice pace. On my days off, I've had a chance to visit the city, and this next block of days, I'm going to Whistler with some of my new friends from the hospital. I've had a chance to learn a few things at work, and have offered some suggestions as
well. I love the fact that I have been both learning and giving!
I'm now considering where I would like to go for another assignment. I haven't visited much of Canada yet, so the fact you have assignments across the western provinces is really appealing.
Thanks for opening this door in my nursing career!
Louise B., Markham, ON
